5 Common Misconceptions About Pilates (And the Truth!)
Pilates is more popular than ever, but with its rise in popularity comes a fair share of myths. At SW4 Pilates, we’re all about demystifying the method and helping you understand the real power behind this century-old system. Here are five of the most common misconceptions about Pilates and the truth behind them.
1. "Pilates is just stretching."
The truth: While Pilates does involve lengthening muscles and some gentle stretching, it's far from just a stretching routine. The springs and the equipment are a extremely important part of the system, designed to support and challenge your muscles while you move. Pilates builds strength, supports and strengthens big ranges at all joints, and works on alignment, control, and breath. This all helps your feeling more aligned , centred and free to move.
2. "You need to be flexible to do Pilates."
The truth: Flexibility is a result of Pilates, not a requirement. Whether you can barely touch your toes or you’re a former dancer, Pilates meets you where you are. Our intro class is designed to assess your unique body and create a path forward regardless of your starting point. It is actually so important to go through the assessment , you can take time to practice and listen to your own body , learn as you move and experience the movement in your own body.
3. "Pilates is only for women."
The truth: Pilates was created by a man, for men. It was originally developed for soldiers and athletes recovering from injury. Then, nearly accidentally Joseph Pilates had his own studio in New York in the same building as a performing arts company and they started sending him their injured dancers , and Pilates helped them return to movement. At SW4 Pilates, we train clients of all genders - from elite athletes to busy professionals. Everyone benefits from the strength, control, and injury rehab/prevention Pilates provides.
4. "Pilates won’t give you a real workout."
The truth: Don’t let the slow, controlled movements fool you…Pilates is tough. It challenges deep stabilizing muscles you probably didn’t know you had. It is easy to sweat and feel big mobilisers muscles such as glutes and lats and hamstrings but have you ever felt your deep hip muscles helping you control , hold a position, while you balance on the foot and move a heavy spring?
Expect to sweat, shake, and discover entirely new layers of strength and endurance.
5. "Group classes aren’t personalised."
The truth: Not at our studio. At SW4 Pilates, we keep classes small (max 3 people) to ensure you get individual attention. Your teacher gives real time feedback to correct malalignments, helping you move safely and effectively. It’s as close to a private session as a group class can get. Plus, are teachers love to be there for so you can truly get the benefits of the class.
